BACK to Intro to Electronics

More about diodes, BJT, JFET, Photodetectors, Inductors and Transformers and such!

  1. You need to review this site Electronic symbols. Later you will have to draw a schematic/block diagram using such symbols from a power supply that you will reverse engineer. This is a sample of a schematic diagram.   Do a search and locate a block diagram of some electronic or system automation. Provide the URL where you found one.

  2. Research:
What is a BJT? (not just what the acronym stands for but what is it?)
What is a FET? (not just what the acronym stands for but what is it?)
How is a BJTand FET different?
What is MOSFET? (not just what the acronym stands for but what is it?)
What is a JFET? (not just what the acronym stands for but what is it?)

Review the following sites for an explanation.  Also
be prepared to discuss this in class.

Sites to search for answers.

Allied Electronics     Mouser Electronics     Texas Instruments

NPN

PNP

    BJT Configurations
Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT)
Transistors
MOSFET
JFET Operation

3.  What is a Diode?
How is a typical diode constructed?

What is a tunnel diode?
What is an LED?
What is a Schottky diode
What is  a voltage variable capacitor diode (Varactor Diode)?

Use these sites to seek the answers to these questions to be discussed in class.

4.  What is UJT?
How is it different from a Bipolar Transistor?
Be sure to reference your text as well.

Comparison of a Transistor to a UJT

5.  Explain how to test a 7 segment display. 7 segment
Be able to field test a segment display component to determine if it common cathode or common anode.

6.  Explain in writing what inductors are and what they maybe used for.
Be able to test an inductor for proper operation.

Inductor Theory

8. Explain in writing the principle of operation of a transformer.
Transformer principles
Transformer Basics
Transformer Conversions

9. What is a zener diode?
    What is it used for?

10.  What is a  SCR? (not just what the acronym stands for but what is it?)
       What is it used for?

11.  What is a heat sink?

12.  What is a full wave rectifier?
        What is it used for?

13.    Quiz:
You should be able to identify these devices.

Transistors 7 segment display  Relay SCR
JFET Inductor Capacitor coil
UJT heat sink Potentiometer IC Voltage Regulator
Diode Transformer Rheostat Solenoid
Zener diode Full wave rectifier Thermistor micro switch
Tunnel diode Motor Photoresistor BJT

  • I will pass out to each student a specific device that needs to be identified.
You are expected to share verbally (visually) what you have found out about your device with the class.
  • There will be a time when you need to replace an electronic a part that is defective in some manner .. burnt out or just failed and has to be replaced.
What is the part ... how does it work ... what may substitute for the part if anything? How would you go about finding out all about the part?  answer ... research. Where would you research?
